A happy old landlubber

Welcome friends, I'm glad you droppped my. I hope you enjoy my website.

A supervisor once said to me, “Louise, when I ask you what time it is, don’t tell me how to make a clock.”  Being concise is not my long suit. But I am determined that, however difficult it might be for me to skip the details, “about me” will be a short version – just the facts.

  1. Born a long, long time ago in Tulia, Texas.
  2. Was Mama’s child for the first six years.
  3. Went to school for twelve years. Graduated Amarillo High in 1950.
  4. Married in 1951 and during the next seventeen years I gave birth to and cared for five children.
  5. Added a job to the schedule in 1969 when I went to work for Texas Employment Commission. Worked as an interviewer for twenty-three years.
  6. Shortly before retiring, I surprised everyone, including myself, when I began writing.
  7. Five books later, and I'm not through yet.    That's the short version, but when an opportunity to talk about my books comes along, a short version is practically impossible. I'll do my best. Here are a few things I'd like you to know.

THE JOURNEY

Two of my books, No City Limits, The Story of Masterson, Texas (not available at present)  and Images of America - Dumas, are about places in my part of the world, the Texas Panhandle. I enjoyed the research that it took for those two, but it hardly compared with the joy of meeting, interviewing and becoming friends with the twenty Panhandle people featured in Some of My Heroes Are Ladies and Some REAL Good Old Boys.  And that is certainly true of my latest, The Remarkable Plans for Captain Travis O. Evans. I didn't dream of writing till I was nearly sixty and it's been a fantastic journey for me.

ACCOLADES

There's one other thing I'd like you to know about my books. Not one of them has been a best seller; I haven't even won a writing contest, but I've had my share of accolades of a different kind. In various ways, all the men and women I wrote about and their family members have expressed their gratitude and appreciation for my work. Let me share my favorite. It kept me in tears for days.

Bob Wyly was living with advanced prostate cancer when our interviews began. I made as many of the two-hundred-plus mile trips for interviews as quickly as I could. On a particularly emotional visit, I think we both knew it would be our last. Bob loved to sing and he sang for me that day - In the Sweet By and By. Just before I left, he told me how he had enjoyed and appreciated our time together, and he said to me, "You've dug stuff out of me that I didn't know was in there anymore. You are an artist at what you do."

Now that the most beautiful accolade I could ever wish for. I'll never forget it.
