Men Ages 84 to 95 Tell About Life in the Texas Panhandle

Some Real Good Old Boys

Buck Buchanan, cowboy, director of the North Plains Water District and State Representative for the 37th District of Texas, had retired a few years before I interviewed him. I don’t know whether he had more fun telling his stories or if I did in hearing them. It was such a good experience, well, one thing led to another and....here's part of my introduction to Some REAL Good Old Boys:

In the past, the term "good old boys" had none of today's negative connotations. In fact, it was a compliment to a man's character. It meant he was honest and trustworthy; he kept his word, paid his debts, and you could believe what he said except for an occasional stretching of a good story into a slightly better one. He was polite; as a guest he wiped his feet before entering a home, took off his hat and washed up before going to the table, ate what was put before him without complaint and expressed gratitude to the hostess. He had a sense of humor; was always ready with a funny story, but mindful of his audience, he saved some his best for the men who gathered out in the yard after dinner. He was respectful of women, courteous to the elderly, patient with children, first on the scene to help a neighbor in need, and he took good care of his animals. He worked hard, often from daylight to dark and beyond; he didn't wait for anyone to do his share of the work and was proud of a job well done. He wasn't perfect by any means, but he knew about God and the Golden Rule, and the Ten Commandments meant something to him.

This book is the result of my collaboration with eleven of the best "good old boys" you could ever hope to meet.... I think you'll enjoy it.....
